National Geographic Grand-Prize Winner Announced

On Monday, January 7th, it was announced that the stunning image (pictured below) of an Indochinese Tiger shaking snow from her coat, titled The Explosion!, had won the National Geographic Photo Contest for 2012. The photograph took home the Nature award, as well as the Grand-Prize.

Grand-Prize Winner and Nature Winner

The subject's name is Busaba, a well cared for Indochinese Tigress whose home is at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Thailand. I had taken many portraits of Busaba previously and it was becoming more and more difficult to come up with an image that appeared any different to the others. Which is why I took to observing her more carefully during my visits in the hope of capturing something of a behavioural shot. The opportunity finally presented itself while watching Busaba enjoying her private pool then shaking herself dry. In all humility I have to say that Mother Nature smiled favourably on me that day!
Photo Location: Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Chonburi, Thailand

Vincent, a native of Chonburi, Thailand, where the photograph was taken, was awarded the $10,000 prize and a trip to the magazine's headquarters in Washington, D.C in order to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar. The contest received more than 22,000 submissions from more than 150 countries around the world for three primary categories: people, places, and nature.

Here are the rest of the winners:
