Fashion World Video: Are There Too Many Photographers? 

Tommy Ton, fashion blogger/photographerI was intriduged by today's Video Pick (an excellent piece by Garage Magazine) from the perspective of historial fashion journalism. The rise of bloggers and street photographers has increased the visibility and proliferation of fashion images, and I suspect it's the same in every lifestyle segment.

Aside from my work at the New York Institute of Photography, I run an interior design blog, and there are a zillion blogs in my space now (I was an early pioneer back in 2007), and each design event is photographed by dozens of shooters, from pros with DSLRs to smartphone snappers. Sports, fashion, design, celebrities, politics, general news - literally every segment of society is now photographed like - as our video today points out - a parody of reality shows.

We have this sudden urge to document everything and everyone, and then spread the word. Digital photography, the blogosphere, social networks, and smartphones make citizen journalism possible - with its positive and negative connotations. It makes you want to be a much more careful consumer of blogs, magazines, and websites, doesn't it? Let's start to sift through all the images and discern which ones show great photographic technique.

5 of My Favorite Photography Blogs

The brilliance of blogs is that they usually represent a unique individual's point of view. It's the world according to Herbert or Heather Blogger, and it's usually a combination of news and views that gets you jazzed about your specific topic of interest. Alternatives to traditional news reporting and magazine journalism, you can go to a topic-specific blog and get your content fill without having to read diluted news that covers an entire waterfront.

So here are some of my favorite photography blogs, in addition to our NYIP blog, of course. My faves tend not to be too corporate or alligned with a specific manufacturer. They're quirky and opinionated. They're wise and authentic. Try out a few posts from each of these blogs, if you haven't already. I think you'll really like them.
  1. Photopreneur - This website takes a practical look at photo sales opportunities for anyone with a camera, from hobbyist to pro. I like the way the team of writers, who are usually professional photographers and/or marketers, focus in on specific individuals or outlets to offer helpful advice. Sample post: What It Takes to Give Up the Day Job and Become a Successful Photographer
  2. Chookooloonks or Wildly Convinced Your Uncommonly Beautiful - Words fail in trying to heap praise on photographer and author Karen Walrond and the portraiture and other photographs she posts on her quirky and always inspiring photo blog. This is how a talented photographer presents her images to the public; minimal type, beautiful images, and a personal point of view. Sample post: Random Thoughts on Fashion, Frida and Identity.
  3. Beyond Megapixels - If you want basic and creative how-to assignments to help you better master your digital camera, and you're not a pro, this is a great blog. The posts are detailed and self-explanatory, the photo examples are wonderful, and the screenshots of digital image editing help explain the process. There are sections that will help you learn the basics and explore good equipment and resources. Termed a blog that guides "the rest of us" in photography, this is a great site for anyone who wants to learn photography and do better work. Sample post: Focus Stacking in Landscape Photography.
  4. Stuck in Customs - Travel photographer Trey Ratcliff's entertaining and beautifully photographed blog gives you a taste in both still images and video of what it's like to be a top travel photographer. Sample post: The Cemetery in the Monastery Castle
  5. A Photo Editor - Wow. Rob Haggart, a former magazine director of photography, and other contributors from various photo domains (e.g., art photography, fashion photography, travel photography) have put together a blog that covers the inside track on end-users for professional images. This is a great way to see inside a professional photo shoot - and sometimes learn how much it costs - and see great work and compelling reports from photo seminars aimed at pros. Controversy Can Be a Photographer's Best Marketing Friend

Photographers are increasingly turning to social media and blogging as a way to market themselves, or "build their brand," and define who they are in a crowded world of pros. I recently came across a PhotoShelter article entitled The 11 Best Photography Blog Topics, and you should check it out. Their list of try-this blogging ideas is thoughtful, I like the way they link to real photo blog examples of what they're advocating, and they give great suggestions for adding spice and additional traffic to your photo blog. Attracting attention, without defaming or hurting others, is a good thing. 
One suggestion that particularly caught my eye was a "Stir the Pot" idea. The article encouraged photographers to be controversial, take a stand, and strongly voice an opinion. Here's an excerpt from photographer Matt Brandon's stir-the-pot post entitled Photography: What's Real, What's Not and Does It Matter?
Some people, want to define it very narrowly and say photography is for capturing an image of reality. Fine. There are people that use the camera like an office worker uses a xerox machine. If that’s how you want to define it for yourself then that is all well and good. But that’s too narrow for the rest of the world. Likewise, there are people who use a camera like Picasso used a brush. These people are every bit an artist. So, the question really is, either what have you defined as your personal boundaries or what has your profession defined? Look at it this way, if I’m working for the National Geographic magazine they have very strict standards of what can be done with an image once it’s shot. My friend, and Nat Geo photographer, Ami Vitale told me she has to send in the raw files to her editors, completely untouched. In fact, they’re not even allowed to delete files from the card. That’s fine. If that’s the way the magazine wants to do it, and you want to work for the magazine, then you do it their way. You have a choice, their way or the highway. The fact is, there is no right or wrong when it comes to using this tool we call a camera.

Photo Marketing 101: Start Blogging

Welcome back to Photo Marketing 101, our series of blogs on Marketing for Photographers. Last time, I shared with you some ideas for using video to market yourself.
