Introducing the GoPro Hero3

If you haven't heard about this incredible gadget yet, it's time to get onboard (no pun intended). Actually, to call it merely a gadget is to downplay it greatly. The GoPro site claims it to be the "World's Most Versatile Camera" and it's hard to disagree with them there. The HERO3 is a wi-fi enabled, wearable camera/camcorder developed by Woodman Labs that can be mounted on almost any sports or outdoor equipment. It is "waterproof to 197' (60m), capable of capturing ultra-wide 1440p 48fps, 1080p 60 fps and 720p 120 fps video and 12MP photos at a rate of 30 photos per second." Oh yeah... and it weighs a measly 2.6 ounces! At anywhere from $200 to $400 (depending on the edition and the various add-ons available), you are getting a lot of bang for your buck with the GoPro HERO3. But don't take our word for it, check out the site's promo video below!

You may be thinking that this looks like the work of highly trained professionals in a big budget production, and your personal use may not be worthy of such a heavy duty device. Well, here is a simple how-to-video of photographer Marc Silber's son fastening the HERO3 to his surfboard and then using it out on the water that ought to dispel those notions:

Video Pick: Use Film Photography to Capture Saturated Images

Photograph by Ryan Tatar

I'll tell you what I like about today's Video Pick: I love the surfer vibe that reminds me of California in the Sixties. Even though I grew up in the landlocked Midwest, every boy and girl knew about the world of Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys, and photographer Ryan Tatar loves to capture that vibe in saturated color using inexpensive film cameras, purchased for "pennies on the dollar" in the digital camera age. The video focuses on Ryan's process and film tips.

Find Your Camera Manual Here

If you're like most photographers, you take great care of your camera, lenses, and other gear, but can't seem to find that instruction manual when you need it most.   It could be buried in a drawer somewhere, or maybe it's long gone, out with the trash.  Even if it's an older model, you are not out of luck thanks to our new affiliate, "Manuals Ink."

The Gizmon iCA Leica-Inspired iPhone Case - What Do You Think?

It seems that retro camera styling is hipster chic all of a sudden. Japanese manufacturer Gizmon has developed the iCA, a three-color-choice polycarbonate case (with functionality) for the iPhone. Turning your iPhone into a Leica look-alike - Steve Jobs said that the iPhone's design was inspired by Leica to begin with - certainly takes the product design full circle.

Our opinion? Well ... there are cases to trick out your iPhone to no end, from burnished wood and metal cases to rubbery skins and stickers, so this fits in with the customization trend. But is it necessary to turn a SmartPhone into a camera? How's this for a concept: try buying a camera to function like a camera. Yes, your iPhone has a camera function, but it's not a dedicated device, and it won't be one in the near future. A rose is a rose is a rose.

Your Comments

What do you think? Is the Gizmon iCA iPhone case for you?
